Snowy Creek Campsite Bright

Snowy Creek Campsite is well-positioned for a stay in the Bright area. It is located on the banks of the Ovens River and is a relaxing place to stay. The site is also known as Butch Camp.

Snowy Creek Campsite - Butch Camp

The camping area is easily accessed via the sealed Great Alpine Road. It is a 7.5km drive south-east of Bright. The unsealed track to the camping area is directly before crossing the bridge. The track was fairly bumpy on our visit. If you are in a 2WD we would recommend parking next to the road and walk the track before entering. Within the camping area drive carefully as there are some holes.

This campground should be avoided in wet conditions.

You need to be self-contained and self-sufficient to stay at this campground. No facilities are provided.

Pets are permitted, as are fires outside of fire season.

Campground Layout and Features

This campground has approximately 10 campsites located on a flood area adjacent to the Ovens River. The area is uneven and you will need to select your site carefully.

The majority of the sites are along the Ovens River. These spots are the first to fill. If the area near the river is full, there are a few sites a little further from the river.

As mentioned earlier, no facilities are provided. You must be self-suffiient and take all your rubbish with you.

The image below shows the best areas to camp in. On a subsequent visit the area to the left of the access track had apparently been closed as pegs had been placed along the road.

To access the site turn off Great Alpine road. Look for a dirt track on the north side of Old Harrietville Road before the bridge. The location is shown in the map below. You may zoom out for a more general view.

What to Watch Out For at Snowy Creek Campsite

As indicated earlier the track in and the area itself is a little rough. There are holes and the area is covered in grass. Snakes may be a problem at times.

Final Words

Despite it being a little rough, we enjoyed our stay here. It was quiet, and we had a lovely spot next to the river. It was convenient to get into Bright and explore the area.

If you have a bicycle, there is an excellent bike path on the opposite side of the river. There is also a picnic area located here. You can access them by crossing the nearby bridge.

We were here at the end of April when the leaves had started to turn. It really does put on a lovely show.
