Kalpowar Crossing Campground is located in Lakefield National Park. It is an excellent place to spend the first night or two on the way up to the York Peninsula. The campsite is close to the Normanby River. It is easily accessible from Cooktown, even if you are not continuing north.

To stay at this campground, there is no need to be self-contained as toilets and showers are provided.
Being a national park, pets are not permitted at this campground.
Tents are permitted.
Fires are permitted in the supplied fireplaces.
Before arrival, you must book your campsite. There is no phone coverage at this site.
As there are considerable lengths of unsealed roads, a 4WD is recommended.

Campground Layout and Features
Ten sites are available for independent travellers. On the other side of the road, there is a further area for commercial operations. All sites are marked and must be booked prior to arrival. Use the link in the table above or below to book your site. You must create an account before you can book a site.
The sites are suitable for tents, camper trailers or off-road caravans. They are fairly flat and have a water tap. The taps have signs indicating that the water is not suitable for consumption. The sites have a fair amount of shade.
The area is a little above the river. Sites 7 to 11 provide the best views of the river.
There are steps down to the river from the area. The 4km Kalpowar Discovery Walk is nearby.
Two toilet blocks and a shower block are provided. The facilities are clean and serviceable.
Kalpowar Crossing Campsite Location
The campsite is accessed from Cooktown via Battlecamp Road and Lakefield Road. It is a 170km drive. During our visit, the roads were in good condition. A 4WD is recommended to access this campground. There are a couple of creek crossings. The map below shows the campground’s location. You can zoom out for a more general location.

We found no issues with this campsite.
Keep in mind that you need to be crocodile-aware in this area.

This campsite has the best facilities in Lakefield National Park. As such it can get busy.
