White Sands Campground is a small campground east of the Port Gibbon town site. It is directly behind the beach, a short 10 – 20 m walk away. All sites are located along the fence line surrounding the campground.
White Sands is an idyllic campsite nestled amidst the relatively untouched beauty of nature. Situated on the edge of a pristine beach, the campsite offers panoramic views of the azure ocean stretching as far as the eye can see. It is excellent for relaxing, fishing and swimming.
The campground can be accessed from the south and north. From the south, the roads from the Lincoln Highway are unsealed until the Port Gibbon townsite. The roads are well maintained, and no corregations were present when we arrived. From the town to the campground, the road is sealed. The road is sealed between the campground and Cowell.
You must be self-contained to camp at this site and all the other beach campgrounds in the area. Bookings must be made online (links are provided below).

As the beach faces south and with no dunes between the campsite and the beach it is very exposed to southerly winds. It would be a good idea to check the wind forecast if you wish to book close to the time you wish to camp here.

White Sands Campground Layout and Features
There are five sites at the White Sands Campground. Of the five, the locations of four of them are clearly marked. There is no marker for site number 4. Our interpretation of the map at the campground is that site 4 overlooks the beach. The sites are marked in the photograph below. The small circles show the accurate location of the site markers for sites 1 to 3 and 5. Our interpreted location of site 4 is also shown.

Sites 1 to 3 are spaced close together along one side of the area. There is a bit of apparently unused ground to one side of site 3. As no one else was at the site when we visited, I assume these are reverse in sites. These sites are quite small and maneuvering may be difficult with larger vans
Site 5 is along the other side of the fencing and close to the entry point to the campground. It is suitable for larger vans. The orientation is such that it allows your van to provide protection from southerly winds. It also allows you to occupy a bit more space. With people in the other sites, I’d suggest that this site is the pick of the crop in windy conditions. In calm conditions, you could consider site 4.
The other option for larger caravans is site 4. Although this site is more exposed to the wind. The ground is a little less flat and more uneven than the other sites.
All sites are reasonably flat and on firm ground. The booking page states that the ground may be soft and uneven, but this is not the case.
Other than rubbish bins there are no facilities at this campground.
White Sands Campground Location
The campground is 3.2km east of Port Gibbon and 15km south west of Cowell. The map below shows the location.
What to Watch Out For at White Sands Campground
With little protection from wind, this would be the only major negative of this site. As suggested earlier, check the wind forecast if possible before booking.
During our visit, there were march flies on the bite.
Closeby Campgrounds
There are six other campgrounds in the White Sands area. They are bookable using the same link provided earlier. We did not visit them so can not provide first-hand knowledge. Here are their names and the number of sites at each:
- Port Gibbon Jetty Campground: 6 sites
- Flat Rocks Campground: 3 sites
- Hideaway Campground: 1 site
- Serenity Campground: 2 sites
- The Fence Campground: 2 site
- The Sanctuary Campground: 2 site
Final Words
If you are travelling in this area, you should do yourself a favour and visit this part of the coast. If you wish to stay White Sands Campground is a good option. However, I am sure that the other campgrounds will provide the same experience.

Closeby Campgrounds
If you are heading east from this campground or area, Mambray Creek Campground in the Mount Remarkable National Park is a great option.
If you are heading further south on the Eyre Penisula and wish to stay in Coffin Bay National Park, we suggest Yangie Bay Campground.
Updated 9/1/25 due to price increase from $10 per night to $15.
Went to book into our camp ground which was number 2 and people that did not book was already in there how to you let the authorities know
Hi Brian. yeah unfortunately there are a lot of self-absorbed people around (I’m trying to be polite). It is something that always concerns me when I book these type of sites. You could contact the council but I suspect that they will be much more than shrug their shoulders. The contact details are on their homepage.
