Sheffield Campground

Sheffield Campground is a convenient place to camp while exploring Sheffield and the surrounding area. From the campground, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Mount Roland.

As its name suggests, the Sheffield Campground is located in Sheffield. It is an easy walk into town. Sheffield is just 27 km from Devonport, which makes it a great place to spend your first night in Tasmania after getting off the ferry. Sheffield is accessed by highway and good-quality roads.

Campground Layout and Features

Sheffield Campground allows for about 15 vans. It is a large flat area. On the eastern side there is a grassed area. The western side is gravel. The sites are not marked. To allow the greatest number of sites you should reverse in perpendicular to the fence.

Do not set up close to the water tap, as you will be asked to move. While we were there one van had to leave the site as they parked close to the water tap. When they were told to move, the site was full, so they had no option but to find somewhere else to camp.

A dump point is located close to the campsite. It is at the entry point near the Sheffield Football and Cricket Club building.

At the back of the campground in the left-hand corner a potable water tap is provided. The location of the tap and the dump point is indicated in the image below.

Rubbish bins are provided at the site’s entrance.

There is a toilet block and shower block near the campground. It is not associated with the campground. It may or may not be unlocked. As far as we could tell, it is a unisex facility. Showers are $1. Each cubicle contains ceiling-to-floor doors and it has been recently remodelled.

During busy periods, there is an overflow area in the adjacent pony club.

The fee to stay at this site is $10 per night. A caretaker collects the fees in the early evening. You can only pay using cash. There is a maximum stay of four days.

What to Watch Out For at Sheffield Campground

Other than not camping close to the water tap we found no issues with this campground.

The only issue is that it can get very busy. As with any popular campsite in Tasmania, it is a good idea to arrive early as they tend to fill quickly. Don’t turn up in the early evening expecting to find a place to camp.

Final Words

We enjoyed staying at Sheffield Campground. It is easy to walk into town to visit the shops or the pub.

We arrived on the ferry in the morning and stopped in Sheffield to get our bearings and stock up on fresh vegetables and fruit.
