Campground Layout and Features

The Balhannah Campground has 12 defined campsites on a well-mowed grassed area. These 12 sites fill very quickly. We arrived fairly early and found that all the marked sites were occupied. A kind person informed us that camping between the 12 sites and the creek was tolerated. We took up a spot, as did others who arrived after us. Fortunately, we encountered no issues doing so.

The $15 per night fee may be placed in an envelope available on the side of the shed at the back of the area or directly to a bank account. The envelope is placed in a slot next to the envelope box.

Late in the day, representatives arrive on site to check that people have paid. They come and have a quick chat. Nothing was said to us about where we camped.

All sites are unpowered, and there is no direct attachment to water. All grey water must be contained and not emptied on the ground.

Two toilets are available on the oval. Older facilities are at the eastern end of the oval, on the other side of the club buildings, and new toilets are located on the western end near the playground.

There is a dump point on the far side of the oval from the campground. It is located near the main entrance to the oval. After using it, you can continue driving to a turn-around area or exit through a second gate.

Pets are allowed on this site, but they must always be restrained. Campfires and tents are not allowed.

The maximum stay at this campground is 3 days.

What to Watch Out For at Balhannah Campground

The only problem we found was the popularity of this campground. We arrived early and still didn’t get a regular site. While we got the spot on the end of the regular sites, people arriving later camped between the road and the creek. Gum trees overhang this area, and this may be a safety concern and not good if you rely on solar power.

Final Words

This is a good place to stay. It is a good place to base yourself if you wish to explore near-by Hahndorf.
